Environment & Sustainability

At CSCI, we strive to be a knowledge leader and a sustainable organization, committed to reducing our environmental footprint. We recognize that our operations impact the planet, and we view it as both a responsibility and a moral obligation to minimize this impact. Environmental consciousness is embedded in every aspect of our work, from product development to daily operations.

We are dedicated to accountability and making significant progress towards our sustainability goals. Our efforts focus on enhancing the environmental performance of our processes and reducing the carbon footprint of our products. We achieve this by implementing sustainable business practices and supporting sustainability initiatives across our entire value chain.

Our production processes are designed to be environmentally friendly, incorporating Environment Impact Assessments (EIA) for new projects. These assessments help us develop mitigation plans to address potential environmental impacts. By selecting the right technology at the design stage, we ensure minimal impact on the environment and surrounding communities.

For existing projects, we have established Environmental Management Systems (EMS). Compliance with these systems is regularly assessed through Monthly Environment Evaluations, ensuring continuous improvement and adherence to our environmental standards. We conducts trainings on EHS Management System amongst all employees from time to time. In addition, an annual audit is conducted at our plant location. Audit observation and recommendation are implemented without bias and on a priority basis.

Environmental Compliance

CSCI

Complying with relevant laws and regulations is essential for any business to maintain its operations. At CSCI, we are committed to adhering to all environmental norms and regulations at our manufacturing operations and Corporate Office as set forth by the relevant regulatory authorities. To avoid delays in the renewal process, we have established an internal quality control criterion of applying for renewals at least 90 days in advance. This ensures that all enquiries related to environmental compliance are resolved promptly.

We have implemented a compliance governance system to monitor adherence at different levels through internal audit protocols reviewed by the Company Management. Additionally, we undergo focused third-party compliance audits of our systems and processes regarding compliance aspects.

Moreover, we have adopted a proactive approach to ensure adherence to the best compliance management practices. We provide specialized training to our employees to keep them informed about applicable regulations. Since the commencement of our production activities, we have not incurred any fines or penalties related to environmental violations.

Climate Change

CSCI

Greenhouse gas emissions primarily result from the use of fossil fuels and the consumption of grid electricity. Our direct emissions stem from diesel and natural gas consumption within our premises, We use Piped Natural Gas for Heat Treatment instead of other fossil fuel in order to reduce our Scope 1 emissions. We have also installed flue gas recuperates on the gas fired Heat Treatment Furnaces. It helps improve furnace efficiency and recover heat from the flue gases. The waste heat recovered is used in Oven and Boiler to reduce the Carbon Footprint.

Our indirect emissions arise from the consumption of purchased electricity. We are using average 30% of renewable energy to reduce our scope 2 Emission.

CO2 Emission Reduction Measures at CSCI

CSCI

  • Natural gas reduced through energy saver and air-fuel ratio adjustment.

  • Continuously increasing the share of renewable energy in total energy consumption. Exploring and implementing solar and wind power to reduce reliance on non-renewable energy.

  • Installed VFD-based air compressor and motor for energy savings.

  • Reduced process scrap by ensuring "no remaining length of strip in pay-off reel."

  • Optimized cooling capacity by installing VFD on air cooler after furnace fan and switching off one fan.

  • Reduced electricity by developing new PLC program to use single hydraulic pump for entry and delivery.

  • Automated aeration tank blower in ETP biological treatment process.

Clean Energy

CSCI utilizes natural gas to meet its fossil fuel requirements, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable environment. Additionally, CSCI incorporates an average of 30% renewable energy into its total energy demand. In 2023, the share of renewable energy (solar and wind) in its total energy consumption increased to 32.14%, compared to 26% in 2022.

Water Management

CSCI

We utilize water for various purposes such as heating, cooling, steam production, and washing in our product processing operations. Given the water-intensive nature of our processes, long-term water availability is a significant challenge we foresee. Our goal is to become self-sufficient in water consumption and mitigate associated risks by mapping various factors and considerations. Water conservation and management are of utmost importance to us. Our manufacturing location monitors water-related data daily and keeps a record of it. This approach helps us prioritize our objective of achieving water positivity in the future. Our major focus is on recycling water back into operations to reduce dependency on fresh water supply. Towards this objective, we are strategizing to achieve zero-liquid discharge (ZLD) for our Dahej Facility.

We have adopted the 4R approach of ‘Reduce, Reuse, and Recover and Recycle’ to minimize water wastage. The total water recycled during FY 2023-24 was 126,877.60 KL, compared to 115,526.15 KL in FY 2022-23. Our various measures, such as ZLD facilities, STP-treated water recycling, and RO permeate recycling, have helped in recycling 65.61% of the total water consumption.

Green Belt

CSCI
CSCI

We have a clean and green plant in Dahej. CSCI stay focused for prioritizing environmental concerns and take active measures for protection of environment. As a part of the greenbelt development, CSCI has developed land scape garden and planted around 10,000 nos. of trees in and around Dahej Plant.

Waste Management and circular Economy

CSCI

As a steel manufacturing company, we handle inherently hazardous substances. To effectively manage waste, we’ve implemented a systematic approach that prioritizes waste management based on different operating scenarios and the types of waste generated. We actively explore opportunities to use recycled materials and repurpose waste generated within our operations. For instance, we reuse raw material’s plastic Packaging Material, Inner Coil Protector, and Outer Coil Protector in our finished goods packaging. Our ‘waste hierarchy’ emphasizes reduction, reuse, recycling, and recovery over disposal, promoting a circular economy.

This sustainable practice allows us to manage both hazardous and non-hazardous waste responsibly. Compliance with legal norms related to hazardous waste, batteries, and e-waste management is a top priority. All waste generated undergoes recycling through authorized recyclers and vendors.

In the fiscal year 2023-24, we generated 116.87 MT of hazardous waste. Of this, 25% was sent to SPCB/CPCB authorized recyclers, 69% to landfilling, and the remaining 6% was equally allocated to co-processing and incineration.
